Germany advances on granting 5G and does not exclude Huawei
The stakes are economic and technological, but also political and diplomatic. Germany starts this Tuesday, March 19th a multi-week auction for the 5G frequencies.
The resort or not for their introduction to Chinese equipment creates controversy.
The place is undoubtedly one of the most watched in the country. In a barracks in Mainz, experts without mobile phones and protected from outside espionage have been participating since this morning in auctions. Objective: to acquire in the coming weeks the frequencies of 5G, this technology at least 100 times faster than 4G. It should allow in the future to ensure by its performance to vehicles without drivers to circulate, machines in the industry to communicate remotely together or a more simple distance medicine.

The three mobile operators present in Germany, Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and Telefonica Deutschland, are participating in these auctions as well as an internet operator. The auction could bring up to 5 billion euros to the German state.

Beyond the financial and technological stakes, this procedure gave rise to political debates on the use or not for these 5G frequencies of equipment of the Chinese leader Huawei on the market. The United States is opposed, fearing the risk of espionage.

The US ambassador to Germany has threatened Berlin to no longer provide confidential information to his partner in the future if Huawei equipment were to be used. Rather than outright exclusion from Chinese society, Germany wants to adopt a catalogue of measures to avoid the risk of espionage.
